In the midst of a whirlwind conference season, our team joined airport leaders and industry partners in Chicago for Airports@Work. Across conversations, panels, and time with peers, one thing was clear: it's an era of accelerating change for airports. Major events are introducing new pressures, innovations must be implemented more quickly, and communication ecosystems are changing.

From new strategies and technologies to the impact of major events, we covered a wide range of topics during the show. Keep reading for our key takeaways.

Preparing for High-Impact Events

Large-scale events and the passenger surges that accompany them have been a major focus across the industry this year, and Airports@Work pushed the conversation even further in the panel We’re Not Here to Start no Trouble, We’re Just Here to do the [Insert Large Event] Shuffle.

As airports across the country prepare for the upcoming mega-decade of events, they’re expecting every aspect of their operations to be put to the test. Each event will bring unique challenges. They’ll also bring unique opportunities to explore and implement new innovations.

High-pressure periods can act as catalysts for long-term improvements. The same strategies that support smooth operations during periods of peak passenger volumes can continue delivering value long after the event has ended. Tailored content and real-time communication are essential for building better experiences and supporting airports’ operational goals.

As airports prepare for the mega-decade of events, Synect’s new event experience solution, EventReady, is making waves. Launched in early April and featured in Airports International and Airport Improvement, the program supports airports and passengers at every stage of every event. With custom content built to enhance passenger experiences while boosting airport revenue, it makes every event easier and more enjoyable for everyone.

From Innovation to Implementation

Applying innovation was another major theme at this year’s show.

Airports are rife with ideas, pilot programs, and emerging technologies. But scaling those innovations into meaningful, lasting results can be challenging. Multiple conversations explored where innovation efforts tend to stall and how airports can more effectively move from experimentation to implementation, including the incredible panel Airports as Innovation Facilitators: From Pilot to Scaled Impact, which featured speakers from the Orlando International Airport and the Houston Airport System.

Adopting new tools isn’t enough. Integrating them into daily operations to deliver measurable value is essential.

Synect’s Evenflow Crowd Radar, which will soon launch in one of the country’s largest airports, was built with measurement in mind. Strategic content influences passenger behavior. Integrated LiDAR anonymously tracks crowd movement to assess the impact of each type of content.

Orlando International Airport piloted Synect’s Evenflow Crowd Radar and worked with our team of experts to assess it's impact in 2020.

As airports evaluate cutting-edge solutions, including AI-augmented tools, the focus is on value. The success of each tool depends on thoughtful implementation.

Building the Next Generation Airport Ecosystem

Modern airports are interconnected ecosystems. Emerging technologies and new operational systems are increasingly working together to create digital environments that are as dynamic as the airport itself.

Annie’s Journey at MCO uses live data to share always-accurate wait times. The award-winning experience was built through a major collaborative effort between multiple teams at MCO and Synect.

Technology alone can't create connected experiences. Collaboration is just as critical. Airport teams must work together to break down silos and align around shared goals. Those new connections help airports deliver the seamless experiences passengers expect.

Looking Ahead After Airports@Work

Airports@Work reinforced what our team is seeing across the industry: airports are evolving into more agile, more connected environments. Innovation remains important, but it’s the outcomes that are essential. It’s not just about what’s coming next for the industry. It’s about how we get there.

We loved connecting with our peers and examining the future of the industry. If we didn’t get a chance to connect during the show, you can reach our team online any time.
